Do Pickup Lines Work Long Term?
Sometimes, you really want to break the ice with someone and you’re not sure how. Whether it’s after a class, at a bar, a club, or even hanging out at a friend’s place, it can be hard to know what to say to make a good impression. Pickup lines have the appeal of not making you work hard to think of something. Memorize the line, walk up to her, and just repeat it. Easy, simple, ice is broken. But if you’re looking for more than a hook-up, are pickup lines really the way to go?
Over the Top Sometimes Works
A lot of pickup lines are groan worthy levels of cheesy. They can be self-deprecating and funny, and those pickup lines are the best to use if you’re going to use a line at all. Pick something so over the top that it can’t be taken seriously, and then follow it up immediately with “Hi, I’m ____, and I just couldn’t think of another way to start a conversation. How would you rate that joke out of 10?” and keep going. Don’t linger over the joke, and do not use any vulgar and aggressive pickup lines for this.
Don’t Use a Line on a Woman You Actually Want to Date
Be aware that pickup lines have a very bad reputation these days. They’re the hallmark of the one night stand, and even carefully handled, if a woman thinks that’s where you want the night to be headed, she could shut you down so you don’t get the wrong idea. If at all possible, don’t use a pickup line on a woman you actually want to date. Try some more casual conversation first, even though it’s more work; focus on complimenting a particular piece of clothing or jewelry if it’s artistic or symbolic. Or ask her something about the place where you’re at. If you’re at a party, even just a ‘how do you know the host?’ is a good conversation starter.
Pickup lines are a low effort, high reward promise. Someone else did the hard work of thinking them up for you, and now you get to reap the rewards! If only it was so simple. Remember, a pickup line is a lazy way to initiate conversation, and you always run the risk that she’s heard that line before. If it was barely funny the first time, you’re not going to knock her socks off with a third or fourth repetition. It’s better to start with a smile.
The other acceptable way to use pickup lines is a flirty conversation starter. “Hey, I really wanted to talk to you, but I have so many pickup lines to choose from. Why don’t I just tell you a few, and you can tell me some you’ve gotten before, and the one with the best line drinks free?” It’s not much of a game, but it’s better than actually trying to use one to net you a girlfriend
The real key to starting a conversation with a woman is to smile, appear confident, but don’t glare or tower over her. Keep things light, and you’ll do much better with the ladies in the long term than any cheap pickup line would allow you to do.
